Sigma Delta Pi National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society

  WHO WE ARE 

 Sigma Delta Pi, CHI MU Chapter at Kean University, is the local chapter of the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, a national academic honor role of students who have distinguished themselves in the study of the Spanish language.

  REQUIREMENTS FOR MEMBERSHIP INCLUDE:  

• Completion of 18 credits in Spanish courses*
• Completion of at least 3 semesters in college*
• GPA of 3.0 or higher in Spanish
• GPA of 3.2 overall
• High personal character; respectful of all cultures and peoples

  HISTORY  

The Chi Mu Chapter at Kean University was established on May 25, 2006. Nine founding students were initiated in a ceremony that took take place in Hutchinson 100 at 6:30 p.m. The students met after the celebration and officers were elected at that time. In attendance were friends and family of the inductees, Dr. Vinton Thompson, Provost, Professor Joaquín Portuondo, Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages. Also in attendance were Dr. Alicia Portuondo and Dr. Berta Bermúdez, Faculty Advisor of Chi Mu. Kean University is the 539th institution in the United States to establish a Sigma Delta Pi Chapter.

  SELECTION PROCESS  

It is an honor for students to belong to this honor society. The students are nominated by Kean University faculty and they undergo a process of selection conducted by a committee at the national level. They must have a minimum of a 3.0 average in Spanish on a 4.0 scale, and must be on the top 35% of their graduating class or have a cumulative GPA of 3.2. The student must also display exemplary character and a conduct that merits inclusion in an Honor 

  GRADUATING INDUCTEES  </

Minimum Criteria to Become a Member- You need to be a student in the Spanish Department completing a Minor or Major, have a GPA of 3.0 in Spanish on a 4.0 point scale, be in the top 35% of your class, have completed at least 18 credits in Spanish. If no longer a student, you must be actively promoting the field of Hispanic studies

Required Dues- Yes. A fee of $30 is assessed. This is a one-time fee paid by the applicant after she/he has been accepted as member. The National Society receives $25, which includes life membership in Sigma Delta Pi, a pin, and a certificate. The remaining $5 goes to the purchase of carnations and candles, and to cover other expenses associated with the induction ceremony
